How to Love and Laugh with Your Senior Dog

If you’ve ever had the privilege of being owned by an elderly pup, you know that their age can bring special challenges — but also great rewards. Life with a senior dog is different than life with a puppy, but it can be just as rewarding if you’re willing to adjust your expectations. Let’s explore some tips for living life with your senior pup.

Embrace the snuggles. As your pup enters their golden years, they may not have the energy they once did — but they sure do love snuggles! Take advantage of this and give them lots of cuddles and belly rubs. It’s important to make sure that your pup stays comfortable, so provide plenty of soft beds and blankets for your favorite furry friend.

Get creative with exercise. Exercise is still important for our older pups — but it doesn’t have to be strenuous or long in duration. Even something as simple as a leisurely stroll around the block can provide mental stimulation and help keep your pup healthy (just remember to watch out for hot pavement!). If walking isn’t an option, try playing fetch indoors or using food puzzles to stimulate their mind while getting their heart rate up a bit.

Have patience and flexibility when it comes to training. Training a puppy is one thing; training an elderly dog? Well, that requires a whole different set of skills (and patience). Give your pup plenty of time to learn new things without getting frustrated if they don’t pick up on commands as quickly as before – it might take them longer due to changes in memory associated with age-related cognitive decline, so take it slow and steady!

Living life with a senior dog can be incredibly rewarding if you are willing to adjust your expectations accordingly. With some extra love, patience, and creativity, you can make sure that your elderly pup enjoys every day just like they did when they were younger! So go ahead – give those graying furballs all the extra treats they want…they certainly deserve it!
